International Forum on Satellite Earth Observation for Geohazard Risk Management was organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 21-23 May 2012 at Santorini, Greece.
The Forum addressed primarily to Solid Earth & Natural Geohazards and looked at hazards, risks and impacts for the following themes:
• Tectonics
• Coastal lowland subsidence & flood defence
• Landslides
• Seismic hazards
• Other hydro-geological risks (such as groundwater management & inactive mines).
Given its expertise in environmental and geohazards monitoring, TERRASIGNA (former ASRC) has presented to this event the poster “Risk Assessment of Mine Tailing Ponds using Satellite Imagery”, that summarised the results of a project related to preservation and closing mines. Within the project, TERRASIGNA used SAR techniques for monitoring mining tailing ponds Tarnicioara, Ostra, Valea Straja and Poarta Veche in Suceava County.
